Using the Tools for Success

In the last 2 years I've been gaining weight. Why? Lets blame age, metabolism, and injury.

The truth? I was lazy with my food choices and tracking. I wasn't following my meal plans. I have zero issue cranking out a hard core workout. I can bust out burpees and push heaving weight around. I will push so hard that I will cry occasionally cry at the end of my workouts.

What happened? Why did I slack off? Why did I think I had it all figured out?

I was a Weight Watcher member for years. I signed up in 2009 just before my 20 year high school reunion. I didn't want to walk in there feeling bad about myself knowing I could have done something about it. I lost 25 pounds with Weight Watchers and that confidence helped me to workout more at the gym and I eventually tried Insanity and was introduced to coaching.

Somewhere along the way I felt that I was cheating if I was using Weight Watchers AND a Beachbody program. If I used the points tracking system vs the 21 Day Fix containers then I wasn't a good coach. Using Weight Watchers instead of containers would be bad for my business. I kept trying to force myself into one or the other and I ended up not choosing either one.

How many tools do you use for your fitness/weight loss journey?

  • Fitness tracker (fitbit, Applewatch)

  • Food tracking (myfitnesspal, 21 day Fix, Weight Watchers)

  • Food prep tools (pre order food, frozen meals)

  • Nutrition bars

  • Vitamins

  • Scale (for your body)

  • Scale (for your food)

  • Supplements (from many sources)

  • The gym

  • Other fitness sources (Orange Theory, Camp Gladiator, Bootcamps, Spin class, Yoga)

  • Working out at home

  • Running

  • Inspiration sources (Beachbody challenge tracker app, Weight Watchers, Spark, other apps)

We were about 10 weeks away from heading to the beach. My inspiration to change. AGAIN. Just like with walking into the 20 year reunion I didn't want to walk into Punta Cana feeling like I could have done something about this and didn't. What was I going to do about it?

Last weekend my son and I went to the gym together. We played basketball and had a great time. I missed the gym. I used to go all the time. I mostly workout at home now but it felt great to be back in that environment. Most days I get in a great workout at home in 45 minutes or less. But I do love to go to the gym.

Again, I was forcing myself to choose. As a coach you must pick working out at home Heather. Don't you dare say you love going to the gym or you will lose customers.

You know what? You can choose the right tool that helps you. You can choose as many tools as you need.

After leaving the gym I decided that I was going to sign up at Weight Watchers again. It helped me lose 25 pounds before and set me on a great track to more confidence. I looked on the website and found a meeting 5 minutes from my house and it was starting in 15 minutes. I left the house immediately without thinking and headed up there for the dreaded 1st weigh in.

1st Weigh in: It was like the 1st episode of the Biggest Loser. The shame of getting on the scale. No matter what you think you ate your body will keep an accurate record. I wasn't too sad really. I felt a little shame and embarrassment. I kept saying mean things to myself like "You are a coach, you are supposed have this sh*t down, if you don't use the 21 Day Fix containers then you are a failure, if your challengers saw your struggle they wouldn't want to be in your group, THIS is why no one really wants to be in your group because YOU suck!"

TODAY: After 1 week. Last week I weighed in at 10:30am and today I rushed up there at 6:30am to see the results. I just knew that after a week of focus that I would have success on the scale as well as the success I felt all week making great choices.

Drum roll... I'm down 5.2 pounds in 1 week. YES!

Having a scale victory was freaking awesome. You know what was more awesome? Knowing that I made great choices and that I don't have to beat myself up anymore for actually enjoying being a Weight Watcher.

I will no longer hide that tool in shame. I will not pretend that I don't struggle and that I need help too. I truly believe that since I admitted my short coming that I will be a BETTER coach to all of my challengers.

I LOVE SHAKEOLOGY and will not give it up. I've been drinking it 6+ years.

I LOVE BEACHBODY and their workouts. Shoot I teach Insanity live a few nights a week. Beachbody workouts are a huge tool in my tool box.

I LOVE WEIGHT WATCHERS and how their food tracking fits in my lifestyle and keeps me focused on the next great choice.

If you want to improve anything you must track it. You must use the tool that works for you.

Love yourself and make the best choices for your happiness.
